BRAD MERRIMAN – JOURNALIST/TACDNEWS – President Barack Obama has made his decision it appears, the US needs to react to the possible genocide in Syria. What that exact reaction will be, he is unsure at this time. UN Weapons inspectors have returned with their report regarding the use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime on its own people in the Syrian civil war going on in that country. President Obama has said in the past that Assad will be held accountable if he uses chemical weapons on his own people.
Last week Assad allegedly released saran nerve gas on thousands of Syrian rebels and their families, including at least 400 children who were killed. The images have shocked the world showing the horrors of this nerve gas and the brutality of the Assad regime.
Today President Obama announced that he will seek congressional approval for a ‘limited’ reaction to the chemical weapons attack. The result of this reaction will be a hope that Assad realizes he will not get away with using chemical weapons on his own people.
This week the British Parliament voted down a request from Prime Minister Cameron to join the US in this effort. PM Cameron accepted the decision begrudgingly stating “if the world doesn’t react, Assad will get the message that he can use chemical weapons with impunity.”
Earlier in the week, Russian and Chinese officials walked out on a meeting with the UN Security Counsel. Russian President Putin is an ally of Syria, and is against any use of force towards Assad.
Obama’s speech today revealed that he is not considering ‘boots on the ground’, not considering a ‘long term commitment.”
