BRAD MERRIMAN – JOURNALIST – TACD NEWS – Wednesday night was a typical night for a mother and her two young children in South Phoenix. The mother bathed her kids, a 6 year old girl, and an 8 year old boy, and tucked them into bed around 9:30 pm. The children s grandmother drove by around 10:15 and noticed the front door of the house was hanging open. She woke her daughter who immediately went to check on her kids…they were gone. The mother also noticed her 2010 Hyundai Elantra was missing from her driveway. Assuming her kids had been kidnapped, the mother made a frantic 911 call at around 10:25pm.
Around the time when the grandmother discovered the door wide open, the local 911 dispatchers had started getting bizarre calls about children driving a car through local neighborhoods. One caller reported a fence had been ran over. Another reported a vehicle with no lights on, and windshield wipers going fast with no rain. Another reported that it appeared kids were operating this erratic vehicle, that had been weaving in and out of traffic, at times on the wrong side of the road.
An attempt was made to pull the vehicle over, but when the lights were turned on, the vehicle began to swerve, it then hopped a curb and hit a pole. The 6 year old was not wearing a seat belt and the airbag did not deploy, she was gravely injured and died at 4am at a local hospital. The 8 year old boy who was driving received a minor ankle injury and was released from the hospital the next day.
No criminal charges are expected in this case. It is unknown at this time why the children decided to take this car for a ride.
