BRAD MERRIMAN – JOURNALIST – TACD NEWS – British Prime Minister David Cameron announced today that the actions in Syria at the hands of the Assad regime have been ‘deplorable’. Cameron also said that a lack of action by the international community will give the Assad regime the freedom to use chemical weapons “with impunity”. Cameron has advised that a report from the UN Weapons Inspectors that are currently in Syria, needs to be considered before any final decision is made.
Thursday afternoon, Russian officials called an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in New York. In a closed door session they are believed to be discussing Russia’s ally the Syrian Government and the response to the gas attack allegedly perpetrated last week on the Syrian rebels, killing thousands, including men women and children.
Those in Parliament, have made it clear that they are hesitant to strike after years of war in Iraq and Afghanistan. Any military action will be to provide humanitarian support by preventing Assad from releasing another gas attack. There is no talk of removing Assad from office, or of invading Syria.
British Labour party leader Ed Miliband is being accused of flip flopping after stating yesterday that he would support the government in this decision, then today backing off giving what is called ‘succour’ to the Assad regime. Cameron said he feels Mr Miliband may give Assad a sort of aid by playing this political game. Miliband has stated he does not rule out backing a military strike, but that not enough ‘compelling evidence’ has been produced to convince him that the Syrian regime was behind the attack. Miliband also feels extra effort needs to be made to consider the UN in this decision.
