In Part 1 we touched on some of the history of PC as we know it in America today. This article will deal with the examples and effects on our society. As promised, it will be a rocky road so be prepared.
Let me start with “hate crime enhancements”. How can that be bad? Think about it, what that literally is is an additional punishment for what the violator is thinking, is it not? If a white guy beats up a latino guy it is an assault and a crime. If he shouts racial slurs while doing it it adds a separate offense and sentence “enhancement” to his punishment. Why? Are we saying an assault is worse depending on the motivation? Or, are we saying an assault with no racial or ethnic or religious hate is not as bad? This is a result of PC thinking and how it is changing the way we view things. In fact, racial slurs is a PC term. I once read a thought provoking article by a black journalist who proposed the following: If you want to get rid of the Nword, stop allowing people to call it the Nword. Makes you stop and think. If your child is sent home from school which sounds worse and more shocking. “He used racial slurs today” or “He called another child a nigger” The actual word is so incredibly offensive I had a hard time writing it out just now, as I imagine you were shocked to see it written out. As it should be. By PCing it to “the Nword”,and “racial slurs’ and “racial epithets” it not only takes away important shock value, it makes it more acceptable to see and hear. That is not a good thing. How could this help the Left you ask? Because, by dumbing it down and removing much of it’s shock value we are able to address it more frequently. In this respect they can toss labels such as “racist” and “bigot” more frequently without needing as much proof for their claim as they would if we felt the disgust we should. Back to hate crime enhancements. It is an unfortunate byproduct of America’s freedom of speech that we have to allow racist organizations such as the KKK, the Nazi Party, and yes, even the New Black Panthers to exist and speak of their hatreds openly. We now turn around and say, in some situations, your speech which reveals your thoughts and beliefs is illegal and punishable by jail/prison time. While it is hard to argue because hate speech is horrible, it does not take away the fact that it is punishing someone for their views, even though the majority of us find these views ignorant and despicable. By the way, it is important to notice that “hate crime enhancements” do not seem to apply if it is black on white, or even black on asian, or asian on black, etc. At least, not in all the news stories I have seen where this seems like it should apply. Part of PC is the message that whites can not be discriminated against, nor harmed by bigotry, they can only be the perpetrators of it. This helps the Left when painting the Right as bigots and wealthy, evil, uncaring white folks. It also helps the Left garner more support for the Democratic Party when appearing as the Party that truly cares about minorities.
Now I will show some other examples of PC. Back in the 50s it was socially unacceptable to be an unwed mother. I admit, this caused much undeserved pain and ostracization for the young pregnant women and mothers. Enter PC thinking and speech. The 60s brings us Marcuse’s (last article) vision of “free love” and “if it feels good, do it”. We are taught that sexual liberation is the key to happiness, and if drugs, open sex, and anarchist type attitudes make you happy that can’t be a bad thing. By painting anyone who disagreed with these views as “square” and “out of touch” it began to shame society, bit by bit, into acceptance. Who wants to be thought of as an oppressor? Make love, not war…unfortunately we were in a war at the time. For the first time in American history PC thought allowed young adults the freedom to protest not only the war itself but the soldiers who fought and died there. The kids who were drafted and came back shellshocked and injured to be met with protests that were filled with signs of hatred towards them. The returning soldiers who risked their lives only to be spit on by fellow Americans. Remember Marcuse’s “liberating tolerance” as intolerance for anything coming from the Right and complete tolerance of anything coming from the Left. In this way it is acceptable to show vileness and hatred from the Left because the cause is considered just. Yet, if you did not agree with the liberal ideals being taught in colleges across the land it was you who were labeled intolerant. This practice worked so well we see it very much in use today.
Sorry, I wandered off track. Back to the unwed mothers. We are now taught that not only should unwed pregnancy be not shunned, it is almost heroic when a young lady decides to keep her baby instead of abortion or adoption. If you dare imply there is just something plain wrong with being a teen, or single, mother you are “intolerant”. Think I am wrong or misleading you? For those old enough I take you back to the TV show “Murphy Brown” (For those too young, one word:Google) The main character, Murphy (played by Candice Bergen) was going to get pregnant and not even inform the father of the baby. In fact, she would never even be shown to date anyone. She would then raise the baby as a single mother. Republican VP Dan Quayle made a very simple statement:“Bearing babies irresponsibly is simply wrong,” the vice president said. “Failing to support children one has fathered is wrong. We must be unequivocal about this. It doesn’t help matters when prime-time TV has Murphy Brown, a character who supposedly epitomizes today’s intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.” This statement made Quayle an immediate target of the liberal dominated press and Democratic politicians. He made this remark during a speech about family values. He was vilified for this remark so horribly and painted as a woman hater (yes, the “war on women” begins) that no conservative politician in their right minds would dare to utter such a belief publicly again. Look at today: more than half of babies born to women under 30 are born outside of marriage! I grew up with a single mother and will always be grateful to her for being a parent to us 3 kids, yet, I have often wondered what it would have been like to grow up in a 2 parent household. As have most of my friends. This is what PC has done for us, literally changed what is and isn’t acceptable in our society. Single motherhood is not only now the norm, it is heroic. If you disagree with that you will be labeled a “hater of women”. The Left has utilized this new PC thinking very much to their advantage.
I can see I will need to continue this in a Part 3 as I have a lot still to say (STOP, I saw you roll your eyes!)
