Over the last few weeks, Obama has been gaining an advantage in the polls. While they are attempting to hide it, this is putting conservatives in a near panic. Rush Limbaugh – a man that I credit with the title of biggest windbag hypocritical bigot in recent history – recently discussed the change in the polls:
“So there’s a number of things going on with the polls, folks,” Rush Limbaugh said Thursday on his radio program. “Let’s review just quickly some things said yesterday. One of the reasons that you tout a big lead, at the same time early voting begins, is to suppress Romney early voters. Who wants to vote for a loser? Oh, gosh, here we go again. We really don’t have a chance. They know that so many people on our side, all you gotta do is listen to the average conservative pundit and realize that they’re mired in negativity and pessimism. So you build it up, put out a poll that shows a massive Obama lead and early voting goes on, and so you stoke Obama voters, you depress Romney voters.” (“Analysis: Polling criticism unfounded”, CNN, 2012)
This seems to be the conservative company line right now. The problem is that their logic is flawed. These polls do quite the opposite. As Obama supporters see these polls and begin to feel that Obama’s victory is a safe bet, some of them may feel that it is safe to abstain from this election. The likely outcome of the polls showing a large margin of victory is that fewer Obama supporters are likely to turn out for the vote. If you don’t believe me, Fox News (I use the term news loosely) released an article that supports this position (“Fox News poll: Most voters want change, even as Obama holds edge,” 2012). According to the article:
“Romney backers are more likely than Obama supporters to say it’s ‘extremely’ important their candidate wins.”
“The Republican challenger’s supporters continue to be more interested: 62 percent are ‘extremely’ interested in the election, while 52 percent of Obama supporters say the same.”
If the Romney supporters are so much more interested in the election, then it stands to reason that many Obama supporters, particularly those who weren’t very committed, wouldn’t mind missing this election if they felt that Obama had enough votes to win.
What does this mean? It means that those who support Obama in this election must be committed. Register to vote. Show up on election day. Do not let the outcome of polls convince you that your vote does not count. If we are to support our Commander-in-Chief and give him a chance to make a real change in our country, we have to be every bit as committed as the conservatives who want corporations and elitists in charge of our country. If we aren’t, we will suffer the consequences of our apathy and be forced to live under the tyrannical rule of Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and the puppet masters who control their strings.
